Last week, while students at Seminole County Elementary School were prepping to head back into a new school year, the Seminole County Family Connection Collaborate was busy filling 400 backpacks with school supplies. Packed by Seminole County 4-H students and some rising sixth graders, the book bags were distributed to Seminole County Elementary students during the school’s three-day open house events.
Each year the Seminole School Supply Scramble continues to grow and the collaborative could not make this event a success without the help of its wonderful partners and sponsors. The list of supporters continues to expand and this year did not disappoint. Partners that were set up in the gym to share resources with families attending the open house events were: First Port City Bank, Seminole County Recreation Department, Ferst Readers, Southwest Georgia Regional Library, First Acceptance Insurance, Spring Creek Healthcare, Seminole Singers, SCES PTO, Southwest GA Healthcare Clinic, Donalsonville Hospital, Georgia Pines GAP Program, Seminole County Extension Office, Piggly Wiggly, E-911, Retired Educators and the Seminole County Elementary School.
Sponsors that funded the efforts of the School Supply Scramble this year were Community Foundation of SWGA, Mr. Pips, Donalsonville Hospital, SWGA Healthcare Clinic, Kathy Reese, Martha Fowler, Golden Triangle RC&D, Georgia Power, Georgia Pacific, Seminole Pole, Georgia Community Bank, Donalsonville Seminole Chamber of Commerce, and Trinity Crosspoint Church.
Each year this event is a highlight for the collaborative as it always enjoys working with the school and businesses and individuals from the local community to help aid and support the students of SCES.
Seminole County Family Connection’s mission statement is to serve as a catalyst for improving the quality of life for Seminole County’s children and families through the power of literacy.
The Collaborative is proud to stage the School Supply Scramble each year, as well as additional events throughout the year that help it work to improve reading skills for Seminole County children, so that all students are able to read at or above a third grade level by the third grade.
