Fulton County Commissioners approved funding awards to 14 non-profit organizations during its Wednesday, September 18, 2019 meeting. The organizations successfully presented program proposals designed to provide training, education and enrichment to children and youth of color.
The total funding of $100,000 was directed to organizations that are in collaboration with the My Brother’s Keeper Fulton County Taskforce (MBKFC), an initiative of the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance that focuses on building safe and supportive communities for boys and young men of color where they feel valued and have clear pathways to opportunity.
MBK addresses persistent opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color and ensures that all young people can reach their full potential. Through this initiative, cities, towns, businesses, and foundations connect young people to mentoring, support networks, and the skills they need to find a good job or go to college and work their way toward future success.
The six milestones established for grant recipients to meet while providing services include:
- Entering School Ready to Learn
- Reading at Grade Level by Third Grade
- Graduating from High School Ready for College and Career
- Completing Post-Secondary Education or Training
- Successfully Entering the Workforce
- Reducing Violence and Providing a Second Chance
The following programs were funded:
1. 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. – Project Success Program
2. Atlanta Technical College Foundation, Inc. – My Brother’s Keeper Passport to Prominence Program
3. Building Your Legacy Inc. – Building Your Legacy & TYRO Program
4. Community Council of Metropolitan Atlanta, Inc. – Priority Male Empowerment Network Program
5. Create Your Dreams, Inc. – Five Core + Two Funds for CYD’s African American Boys and Young Men Program
6. Housing Initiative of North Fulton, Inc. – Home Stretch University of Excellence Program
7. L.E.A.D. Inc. – The L.E.A.D. Middle School and Ambassador Program
8. Los Ninos Primero, Inc. – Leadership and Mentoring Initiative for Latino Boys and Young Men Program
9. Mental Fitness 21st Century Learning, Inc. – Black Male Science and Technology Academy Program
10. The Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, Inc. – Youth on the Move at Emmaus House Program
11. The Stewart Foundation, Inc. – The Stewart Foundation Men of Tomorrow Program
12. Young Adult Guidance Center, Inc. – YAGC Second Chance for Success Program
13. Urban League of Greater Atlanta, Inc. – Project Ready: A College and Career Access Program
14. Young Generation Movement, Inc. – YGM Made to Succeed – Youth Leadership Camp Program
